GUIDE
SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:
[ABBY LAWRENCE] early 20s. Her only dream in life is to marry a nice boy and
raise a family. Radiant. There is something about her beauty that you instantly
sympathize with.
[MASON LAWRENCE] early 20s. He was the most popular boy in school and
captain of the basketball team. He marries Abby at the beginning of the
play, but may not be ready for marriage, or the sex that goes along with it.
[SHERYL HOWARD] mid-late 20s. Abby’s older sister. She’s as much of an
activist as you can be in Iowa City, and she knows that she isn’t as pretty
as her sister.
[DOROTHY PECK] mid-late 40s. Abby and Dorothy’s mother. She’s very old
fashioned and champions traditional values, even though they may not have
worked for her. Sheryl’s left leaning politics drives her crazy.
[DANIEL HENRY] early 20s. He whizzed through school, likely to avoid his
parents, and is entering medical school at the age of 18. He’s almost an
intellectual, wears eye glasses, but is young to the ways of the world.
[RUTH GUNDLY] mid 20s. Marries Danny at the beginning of the play. She’s
seven years older than Danny, manipulative and the only child of an
overnight billionaire. She is spoiled and a bit trashy, but has human needs like
everyone else.
[BRUNHILDE HENRY/NURSE] mid-late 40s. Danny’s mother. She was born in
Germany, and you can tell.
[HENRY HENRY/DOCTOR/DR. OSBORNE] 40s-early 50s. Danny’s father. He
lived in Germany even longer, and you can tell. He may or may not have
been a German officer during WWII.
[JEREMY/MICHAEL HENRY] early 20s. Danny’s brother. He is the ideal
German boy, but for his constantly failing. Slightly effeminate.
[NARRATOR] 30s. A la the voice-over narrators of those 50s PSA's and social
guidance films. He is the opposite of a Victorian child: Only heard and
never seen.

SEEKING:
[TOM WILLIAMS] mid-to-late 20s. The young Tennessee Williams. He is an
observer, a daydreamer; sensible and hungry, with a writer’s perspective.

paratrooper, he is very physically appealing and manly (i.e. The Gentleman
Caller). High baritone, youthful sound. (C4-F#5)
CHORUS
The five chorus members embody the personalities of Dixieland jazz

along. Gentle wisdom.

Synopsis: The No Game is a 21st century romance using the Middle East
politics of
our time as the dramatic backdrop for this very timely story. Sara Cohen is
an 18 year old New York Jewish girl, who on a trip to Israel learns more than she
bargained for. When she arrives back in New York Sara is a changed girl who
can uniquely see both sides of the Israeli/Palestinian issue. Her first big love
to a Jewish boy is put to the test as is her relationship to her parents Barbara and
Elliot. She enlists the aid of a charming young man named Khalil who is a senior at Brooklyn
College and who guides her on this next part of her journey. Khalil seems to know
everyone and soon after he leads Sara to her Leila, who immediately accepts
her as a miracle from Allah. Back in NYC, Barbara is not about to give up her only
child, the daughter she would gladly die for. She and Leila fight over Sara in a
metaphoric
climatic scene for the ages. Their anger at each other flows from a well of
pain and resentment that reflects the current political situation. Sara, caught
between the
two, feels like she is being torn apart, and lost in the search for her own hybrid
identity. We travel on Sara's journey with her, from innocence to first love to
revelation to crisis to tragic violence to a beautiful new hope for
Sara...and for what
she represents.
SEEKING:
[SARA COHEN] 18-23 a somewhat exotic looking brunette, she's a Sephardic
looking beauty, fierce and unafraid, a popular senior at the academic
Stuyvesant
High School. She is very comfortable with who she is and where she is going:
an upper middle class secular Jewish girl who will be attending an Ivy League
college.
She has already found her first love with her more conservative and
religious
school-mate David who is the product of a modern Orthodox Jewish upbringing.
Despite her many blessings, Sarah feels something is missing in her life. A
warm family dinner at David’s home on shabbos is filled with the comfort of
ritual and it
touches a chord deep within her. She is overjoyed by David’s invitation to
join him on a summer trip to Israel and convinces her mother and kooky estranged
father to let her go. The impending trip fills her with the excitement she has yearned
for, and an intense desire to connect with her Jewish roots. MUST HAVE A VALID
PASSPORT.
LEAD. Caucasian. NAMES ONLY
[DAVID] 18-23, handsome, confident, (not nerdy) high school senior any girl
would have a crush on. This young Semitic leading man falls hard for the
jewel of his class, Sara Cohen, as a potential life partner. Being Jewish is
extremely important to David. He grew up in a traditional home and fits
comfortably into the world he was raised in. Headed to Israel after
graduation he invites his girlfriend Sara to join him on the trip of a
lifetime.
MUST HAVE A VALID PASSPORT. LEAD. Caucasian. NAMES ONLY.
[BARBARA] 42-52. Sara's divorced, juicy, liberal, Upper Westside Jewish
mom, loving and warm, but like many New Yorkers caught up in her hectic
career. While her successful professional life doesn't always leave her
enough time to spend at home, her daughter Sara is still the love of her
life. Barbara has every confidence in the world that her daughter has an idyllic
life ahead of her. That is, until Sara returns from Israel after a shocking
revelation. Now, for Barbara, the only fairy tale left in her life is
snuffed out,
and she has to fight hard to regain Sara's trust and set her family back on
the right path to a better future. LEAD. CAUCASIAN. NAMES ONLY.
[AUNT LEILA] 35-55, she is a strong, vivacious Palestinian woman, raising a
family and running a family owned restaurant in Brooklyn. She is a colorful,
multi-dimensional character who immediately accepts a dramatic life altering
change as a miracle from Allah. Going head to head against Sara's mother,
she is a life force representing centuries of pent up emotions. Her anger
flows from a well of pain and resentment which reflects the current
political situation in the Middle East. LEAD. PALESTINIAN.

[SHERMAN LETIGE] (30)– Sherman is a thoughtful and gifted performer who is
the lead singer/songwriter of a locally successful music group. On stage, he is
a talented vocalist with a charming stage presence. Off-stage is another
story.
Sherman is caustic and combative. He is obsessed with people's perceptions, his
appearance, the success of others, and being the focus of attention. He is
intimidated and outwardly dismissive of his lead guitarist's authentic
talents. Sherman's contrived and forced personal life is a direct contrast to the
effortless
and engaging stage persona for which he is best known. The only thing that
Sherman loves, is music. During an interview, a local reporter uncovers the
secret of Sherman's success. He steals songs from obscure bands and writers,
relying on
his encyclopedic knowledge of music's back catalogue, and passes them off as
increasingly eclectic originals. When the band is offered a record deal, Sherman is
forced to sabotage his career or reveal the charlatan…LEAD. Singing ability
required. Prototypes: a smooth 1990s Jarvis Cocker or Elvis Presley in the
1960s. STAR NAMES ONLY.
[PERRY BLASDELL] (Late 20s) Perry is Sherman's guitarist and best friend.
Perry is the most likeable member of the band, he's well built, has classic
good looks and is friendly by nature. Perry's look isn't as polished as
Sherman's but its close enough in its nouveau-mod sophistication.
Drastically unlike Sherman, Perry doesn't pose and is soft spoken. He's by
far the most talented -if you don't count Sherman's uncanny ability to
steal, mimic and trick people. Perry believes in Sherman or else he would have left
the band years ago. He's an in demand musician and Sherman knows he has
to keep him happy. But when the band starts to take off and Sherman has to
undermine their efforts, a rift opens between the two friends and stretches
wider and wider. Perry can't understand why Sherman wants to throw away
everything they've worked so hard for. Sherman can do nothing to appease
Perry's frustration and lives in fear of the day when Perry will find out
the truth about the band he's in...Large Supporting. Ability to play the guitar
a plus.
[CURTIS WELLS] (Early 30s) Curtis is the seasoned bassist of the group.
Pale, unshaven with long hair and tight leather, Curtis has a kind of NYC
punk sensibility. He's been in a lot of bands for a long time despite any
significant achievements. He likes the rock and roll lifestyle. He likes
drinking, drugging, violence and sleazy sex. Curtis's personality is a
brash, quick tempered, no-nonsense kind of person. He's constantly at odds with
Sherman over the singer's artistic pretensions and prima donna attitude.
Sherman thinks Curtis is an unintelligent, untalented lout, but he needs a
bassist. As Sherman actions get stranger and stranger, Curtis begins to hate
him intensely...Large Supporting. Ability to play the bass a plus.
[SHANNYN PALMERSTON] (Early-Mid 20s)-Shannyn is a music journalist for
a weekly lifestyle magazine. She's young and attractive which she tries to
hide by acting overly serious and conservative in her dress. Shannyn's job
is to report on the shows coming to town and promote the city's music scene.
When Sherman's band becomes the darlings of the circuit, Shannyn is asked
to do a piece on them. Shannyn has a history with Perry dating back to
when she was a fan of his first group. It was Perry that made her want to do
the article because she thinks he's talented and deserving of success. On
the other hand, Shannyn takes an instant disliking to Sherman. Although she
likes his songs, Shannyn gets a strange, unsettling feeling from
interviewing
him. She's the first one to get suspicious of him...Large Supporting
[MISS DEE] (Late 20s-Early 30s) -Miss Dee is the girl's track and field
coach. She's a trained athlete with tight muscles, cork screw hair, a dark
orange tan and whiter than white teeth. She wears a bright nylon warm up
suit on every occasion. She wears it even when she's teaching regular
subjects, not just when she's out on the field with "her girls." She's a
warm hearted, compassionate woman who wants the best for everybody. She's a
motivator and an excellent coach. When Peter volunteers to help with her
coaching, she reluctantly allows him to. Miss Dee doesn't need him but she
senses the old man is lonely and feeling without purpose. Her infinite
patience is put to the test however when Peter's awkwardness becomes a
burden to the girls' on the team...Large Supporting
[CATHERINE / JULIET] (Mid 20s) -Catherine is a twenty-something, accent-
wielding, dark beauty that can crush a man so easily she tends not to
notice. She is the type of heroine that belongs in the world of F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Her weapon of choice is girlish innocence. She sometimes 'trolls' internet
dating websites looking for men with interesting careers and compels them
to buy her dinners...Large Supporting. Seeking foreign-born actresses.
Authentic accent required. NAME PREFERRED.
[SAM THE DRUMMER] (Early 30s) -Sam is a competent drummer with a
humble, boyish persona. He's the youngest of the group and Sherman has a
problem with his lack of style; jeans, t-shirt and running shoes. Sam is
often told what to do and goes along with almost anything. Even when Sherman
makes unrealistic demands of him, Sam can only make a feeble complaint
before falling right back into line. As the band experiences internal
struggles, Sam keeps his feelings mostly to himself and lets the big boys sort it
out...Supporting. Ability to play the drums a plus.
[VICTORIA] (Mid to Late 20s) -Victoria is the co-host of Bot Beef. She's
responsible for the post-match interviews but mostly she's there as eye
candy for the television audience. She's a tall, curvaceous, well tanned and
heavily made up poster girl. Her intimidating looks are softened by her warm
and bubbly personality...Supporting
[HOST] (Mid 30s) -The host of Robot Wars has been given an extreme
makeover to appeal to what kids and tech nerds perceive as "cool." He
wears a leather racing jacket, sports a goatee and has blonde, frosted
streaks in his spiky hair. His job is to sell the action on screen by using
a lot of bad puns, stock phrases and dumb pop culture references...Supporting
[COLORMAN] (Mid 30s) -The colorman is a washed-up sports broadcaster
who's found a home doing the color commentary for Bot Beef. He wears his
standard tie and sports jacket from his days doing basketball broadcasts. He
keeps up the banter with the host during the robot battles...Supporting
[PRINCIPAL RHODES] (Late 30s to Early 40s) -Mr. Rhodes is a decent man,
a fair man. A young, politically aware principal who looks like he used to
play ootball, Rhodes seems like the ideal guardian for today's young adults. But
as an old alumnus of the school himself, Rhodes feels a reverence for the
past, a commitment to the old guard. Peter Norseworthy is a big part of the
past. He has friends in high places in the local education system and they
want Peter to be treated well -even if it means coddling him. So when
Peter's incompetence becomes an issue, Rhodes gives the old man some
slack. It isn't until rumors circulate about some misconduct that the
principal has to reel Peter in to protect his students...Supporting. NAME PREFERRED.
[DR. SAXBEE STENCIL] (Late 30s to Early 40s) -Stencil is the reigning
champion of Bot Beef. He enters the competition as a hobby while taking
time off from his teaching and tech research. He's a highly respected
engineer who gets his kicks by entering robots into the annual tournaments
and annihilating the competition. Stencil is just a voice; we never see
the man's face. Although he only does it for fun, Stencil conducts himself
with the utmost seriousness when talking about his robot Impolex-G. David
is obsessed with beating the professor to prove himself...Supporting
STORY LINE: A fraud, a coward, and a has-been are all forced to confront
their shameful weaknesses in order to change their directions in life. How does a
man learn his true limitations, unless he achieves true failure? Or is it best
to simply avoid personal defeats at all costs? In a world of cynicism, greed, and hate
and narcissism, can life really just be the process of being Kicked Over and
Over?
